Nuria Y. Ortiz-Vargas

Executive Director

Nuria Y. Ortiz-Vargas is the Executive Director of the Center for a New Economy. Nuria directed the Puerto Rico Recovery Fund (“PRRF”), created by CNE after Hurricane María hit the island on September 2017. The PRRF focused on three strategic and interrelated areas, including: addressing immediate humanitarian needs, advocating in San Juan and Washington DC, to ensure maximum federal support and efficient resource coordination, and proposing strategies for medium and long-term economic development.

Nuria was the Executive Director of Espacios Abiertos, a non-profit advocating for transparency and public accountability from its founding in 2014 until the Summer of 2017. She previously worked at CNE in various positions since 2010. Prior to joining CNE, she worked in the private, non-profit and government sectors in Puerto Rico.  Among them, she was Associate VP of Origination & Structuring at General Electric Commercial Finance Corp., and Fund Analyst at Grupo Guayacán, Inc., a non-profit corporation specializing in private equity fund-of-funds investments.

Nuria has a B.A. in Economics and International Relations from Tufts University and a M.Sc. in Development Management from the London School of Economics.  She holds a J.D. from the University of Puerto Rico and is admitted to practice law in Puerto Rico.
